Since its foundation in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, The DonkeySanctuary has grown from a charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse to an impactful international animal welfare organisation transforming the lives of millions of donkeys and mules and the people who depend on them.

Today, we have 12 sanctuaries around the UK and Europe, and we have delivered veterinary, welfare and educational programmes in almost 40 countries around the world, reaching donkeys and mules most in need.
Our aim is to help millions of donkeys and mules worldwide through collaborative partnerships and programmes, research and advocacy initiatives, promoting lasting and sustainable change with communities, partner NGOs, governments, the media and public.
As we embark on our next five-year strategy (2023-2028), we are looking to appoint up to three new Trustees to contribute to the overall governance and strategic direction of The DonkeySanctuary.
We are looking for trustee candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds, with demonstrable experience in one or more of the following:
International Programmes Animal Welfare Human Resources Not-for-profit Leadership Finance and Audit The new Trustees will join at an exciting time for the organisation; trustees will help the Board, CEO and Executive Team to launch and monitor the success of the new strategy and act as a guardian of the charity.
Trustees will help monitor organisational performance in terms of reputation, people, donkey welfare, income and organisational effectiveness.
The Trustees will be joining a collaborative, motivated and open-minded Board.
The Board are committed to the DonkeySanctuary’s mission to improve the lives of millions of donkeys worldwide and to be the leaders in a global plan for donkey welfare.
The new Trustees will bring thoughtful, mature and collaborative contribution to board meetings, and be both principled and innovative.
They will have truly international mindsets as well as a strong strategic focus.
The role of Trustee is likely to require a time commitment of around one day a month in total.
