Permanent, Term Time only Due to growth in service, we are looking for a Science Teacher who has an understanding of and desire to work with children and young people with Autism to help break down barriers to learning and ensure a smooth transition into adulthood when they leave The Shires.
We are looking to recruit a teacher, with experience of teaching Upper Key Stage Two, to our team.
You will deliver a primary curriculum to secondary pupils with autism and associated needs.
You will have previous experience of leading science as a core curriculum subject and ideally hold a degree in a science subject.
Experience of closing the gaps for disadvantaged and SEND pupils would be beneficial as you would be supporting autistic teenagers that have struggled throughout their school journey to achieve their academic and life goals.
Class groups are small allowing you to focus on each child’s needs; all of our pupils are treated as an individual; one size does not fit all and we recognise that in our approach to learning by adapting our teaching to meet individual needs.
We are looking for staff with a knowledge and understanding of autism and developmental trauma, who can apply that knowledge in all of their dealings and interactions with the young people we support.
We use an “in their own time and space” philosophy to support our pupils to navigate their lives.
We focus on understanding behaviour for communication and use this to help support their social and emotional development.
We have a strong safeguarding culture, where pupils are listened to, respected and involved in as many decisions as possible.
We need teachers who have a passion for working with children, have a compassionate, caring manner and a mature, non-judgemental approach to life.

About us The Shires at Stretton and The Shires at Oakham are two Independent Special Schools that cater for children and young people 11-19 with Autism, learning disabilities and other associated needs.
The Shires at Stretton provides education alongside 24-hour residential care, pupils living and learning on the same site.
Pupils that attend The Shires at Stretton have Autism and SLD and are taught in small class groups (4/5 pupils), all pupils having at least 1:
1 support.
The Shires at Oakham is a day only school providing education for pupils with Autism and SLD/MLD.
