Stelco has one opening for a Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist.

This position will assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety and health programs and conducting safety and process reviews.

Location Onsite 2330 Regional Road 3 Nanticoke, Ontario N0A 1L0 Your day-to-day Analyze safety data/trends (internal & external) and assist in the development of corrective action plans Collaborate on a scheduled basis with division and area managers in appraising the performance of units, reviewing division and area incident experience, and collaborate on recommendations and action to be taken by the respective unit concerning Safety & Industrial Hygiene issues Assist facilities in implementing corporate/plant/division specific Safety & Industrial Hygiene initiatives Assist in the development of safety training modules and deliver select safety training as required.

Conduct frequent reviews of established plant safety and industrial hygiene procedures to ensure ongoing effectiveness and compliance Assist in generating division specific information for monthly safety meetings.

Audit random meetings for quality of information, presentation of instructor, and employee participation.

Assist departments/divisions in implementing improvement plans for noted deficiencies Assist divisions in developing and implementing procedures including Safe Job Procedures, energy control procedures, Standard Practices and PPE requirements.

Participate in Hazardous Job Meetings for tasks involving significant risks Periodically conduct safety conversations with employees as well as line management to ensure the consistent use and quality of the safety conversation program Conduct walk through of divisions observing conditions and work practices.

Take immediate steps to modify unsafe practices and elicit required personnel to address housekeeping and unsafe conditions noted Interact with MOL Inspectors as required and follow up on issues arising from any visits Participate in the pre-startup safety review of new facilities, equipment or processes in conjunction with Engineering, Maintenance and Operating personnel Participate in the development of plant specific safety and hygiene audit programs Research industry best practices i.e.

CSA, ASME, ANSI, ACGIH, NFPA, MOL Guidelines, etc.

Order and receive safety-related supplies and services as required Participate in the development and implementation of training programs for plant management and union personnel in compliance with MOL regulations and recognized health hazards Provide assistance in communicating new systems initiatives or system-related changes for any Safety and IH systems in use at plant locations, and provide feedback on new initiatives or changes as needed Participate in, recommend corrective actions and perform follow-ups for incident and injury investigations Job Qualifications Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences or any closely related field 1 year of experience in Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene in an Industrial environment CRSP or equivalent safety designation would be an asset Job Skills and Knowledge Strong analytical skills and attention to detail Extensive safety training Strong communication sldlls, both written and oral Excellent organizational and planning skills Self-motivated problem solver Leadership capabilities Computer skills, particularly MS Office As an individual contributor, qualified candidates for this role also must demonstrate the ability to champion change and effective communication while contributing to team success.
