JOB DESCRIPTION AND CONTEXT:

Rovial is on an ambitious journey to help build a Sustainable Space for Humanity, through advancements in Science and Technology particularly in the fields of AI-enabled robotics systems for space assembly and repair, and high-power generation.

The pioneering and dynamic Space Robotics team of Rovial is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Space Robotics Control And Planning Research Engineer , who loves R&D-driven innovative solution development.

As a Space Robotics Control and Planning Research Engineer, you will drive the advancement of cutting-edge control algorithms and motion planning strategies specifically tailored for autonomous robots engaged in in-orbit servicing missions and complex space operations.

Your expertise in control theory, optimization, and robotics will be pivotal in defining the precise and coordinated movements of our robotic systems in the challenging environment of outer space.

OBJECTIVES AND TASKS:

1.

Spaceborne Dynamics and Kinematics Modeling:

Develop and validate dynamic and kinematic models of robotic systems considering space conditions and for in-orbit operations.

2.

Control and Motion Planning Development for Space Robotics:

Integrate, design, develop, and optimize innovative control and planning algorithms for robots, including manipulators and end effectors, to ensure the accuracy, stability, and safety of robotic motions in the unique conditions of space.

Consider factors like microgravity, reaction forces, and limited resources.

3.

Optimization Techniques in Space and Realtime Performance:

Apply optimization methodologies to maximize the efficiency and precision of robotic control and motion planning in the space environment, incorporating orbital dynamics, and operating in real-time on resource-constrained robotic platforms.

Address constraints related to power consumption, memory usage, and computational resources to ensure reliable performance in space.

4.

Integration of Sensor Feedback in Space:

Collaborate with space sensor engineers to integrate sensory data into control loops, enabling real-time feedback for accurate decision-making.

5.

Space Simulation and Testing:

Utilize and improve space simulation environments to assess and validate control and planning algorithms under various orbital scenarios and perturbations.

Conduct simulations and hardware-in-the-loop tests to verify the algorithms' performance.

6.

AI-based Development and Integration:

Apply AI-based tools and techniques to enhance the control system of the robot, and to improve the task performance capabilities and robustness.

7.

Software Integration:

Perform seamless integration of the solution into the larger robotics software architecture, in collaboration with the team.

Ensure the overall system reliability, fault tolerance, maintainability, code integrity, and robustness of the integrated solutions for mission-critical tasks.

Adapt the integrated solution for space missions in an iterative and collaborative manner.

8.

Spaceborne Testing and Validation:

Design and conduct experiments to evaluate the performance of algorithms in various real-world scenarios and in space-like conditions.

Analyze and evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the algorithms and iteratively refine them as needed.

9.

Documentation:

Create clear and comprehensive documentation, including design specifications, implementation details, and user guides.

10.

Research and Innovation Contact Point:

Stay updated on the latest advancements in control theory, optimization techniques, and space robotics.

Contribute to research efforts within the team and propose innovative solutions.

Serve at the contact point for internal and external research collaborations.

EXPECTED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree with 3 years of R&D/Industry experience or PhD degree in the relevant field.

Strong background in robot control theory and optimization techniques.

Solid understanding of robotic systems and control challenges real-time performance and for real-world environments.

Hands-on experience with robotic systems including manipulators and actuators.

Experience with sensory feedback-based robot control.

Familiarity with robotic simulation environments.

Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, and experience with relevant control and motion libraries and frameworks.

Prior knowledge about orbital dynamics-related constraints and integration into robotics control will be a plus.

Experience in developing control algorithms and motion planning strategies for space robotics or in-orbit servicing missions will be a plus.

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team.

Ability to develop and optimize integrated solution in an iterative manner.

Publications in relevant conferences or journals showcasing contributions to the field of robotics and control will be a plus.

As this is a position exploring and expanding the frontiers of Robotics for Space Applications, the candidate is also supposed to be proactive in understanding the needs, and use cases, and creative in exploring and proposing need-driven innovative hardware and software solutions.
